Alcohol and Drug Abstinence Service - Breaking the chain of addiction.

To summarise, ADAS has now developed a flexible system of treatment, that is proven, easily portable and will prove invaluable for the exciting year we have ahead of us.

Where can these women learn to regain their self-respect, their dignity, their ability to have power over their lives ?

The Power of Women

Stockport has the third worst drug problem in the North West.

by PAT BRAMLEY

When women become dependant on chemicals to cope with their daily lives they start to lose their personal power.
Culturally women are 'derised' for being 'alchie' or 'junkies'.
It seems more shaming for a women to be seen 'in her cups'.
Fighting in the streets or in pubs is more acceptable for men.
These volatile useres are only a small part of the population.
Many more hide their using from family and friends. Drinking when the children have gone to bed. When no-one, including their partners, are around.
Drinking alone not by choice but because they have no-one to share their lives.
The effects of women drinking are far reaching. Traditionally women are the mainstay of family life, supporting all members, but who supports these women ?

Preceptors and Advisors of Life Skills will be mentored by people who have experience of recovery from addiction and have been through the ADAS programme.
Community and Local Members will be mentored by people who have completed the ADAS Family Therapy Programme.

For both projects to be successful we need the commitment of the community, the Youth Development Workers, Ethnic Minority Workers and ADAS counsellors.

PALS and CALMS will receive internal and external training to become volunteers and will be involved in outreach work in schools, colleges, prisons and young offenders institutes, talking about their own experience of addiction and recovery from it. In addition they will be involved in taking members of the ADAS treatment group out to 12 Step self-help groups. They will act as advisors, helping group members to make life changes by sharing theitr experience.

This has been an excellent year.
With a successful bid to the European Social Fund for 45% of our budget to June 2000. This left us to raise over £160,000.

This was achieved by donations and grants from Charities and Companies. We are disappointed in the response from local authorities as we had no support from Central or local Government.

Thank you for allthe donaions of furniture to enable us to move to larger premises with no extra costs.
